Geology

There are various geological units in the Spessart area, which differ in age, formation and mineral characteristics. In the western region of the Spessart we have basement rocks. They're classified as metamorphic rocks from the Paläozoic period. Sedimentary rocks overlie these basement formations in the eastern part. The transition of rocktypes is connected with escarpment structures. In the center of the Spessart we find red coloured sandstones of the Buntsandstein period of the lower Trias. Quartenary sediments are deposited as fluvial material in the valleys or as aeolian layers in morphological basins.
