Abandoned settlements

In the northern part of the Spessart we find a lot of former settlement sites. These settlements were mostly abandoned in the late middle age.

At present settlement density is lower than in the late medieval period. Especially hilltop settlements were abandoned. Today villages are only situated in the valleys.
