Lancewad - Mapping the Landscape and Cultural Heritage in the Wadden Sea Region

Since 1978, The Netherlands, Denmark and Germany have been working together on the protection and conservation of the Wadden Sea in areas concerning management, monitoring and research, as well as political matters. In 1982, a "Joint Declaration on the Protection of the Wadden Sea" was agreed upon in which the countries declare their intention to coordinate their activities and measures for the protection of the Wadden Sea. In 1997, a "Trilateral Wadden Sea Plan" was adopted.

All those who live, work and recreate in the Wadden Sea Region recognize that the Wadden Sea shared by the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark is an exceptional nature area. However, there are probably not many in the region, who acknowledge that the landscape and cultural heritage behind the seawalls and on the islands are of an outstanding importance.

The contemporary landscape bears proof of the long and intimate history of Man’s interaction with nature. The topography of the contemporary landscape is, to a large extent, determined by the way it was shaped by Man. Mounds, dikes and towns are witnesses of a rich past. It is a unique cultural landscape of international importance with a large potential for development e.g. of tourism. Its heritage is fundamental for the identity and perception of the region for those who live and work here and very attractive for visitors. A wise use of heritage is the most appropriate development strategy to ensure that the enormous potential can be used for the benefit of the region.

Lancewad aims at

  • Making an inventory of the landscape and cultural heritage of the Wadden Sea Region.
  • Evaluating and assessing the qualities of the landscape and its heritage.
  • Developing proposals for sustainable management and use of its heritage.

In the project, mapping of heritage sites, will focus on those elements and structures, which are considered to be of international importance. These are for example mounds, sluices, mills, dikes, lighthouses and embankments, all of which are symbols of the interaction between Man and nature. But also villages, towns as well as important buildings and historical sites will be mapped to reflect other aspects of the regionscommon heritage.

The project will attempt to develop methods on how to manage and use regional heritage in the future. This will include proposals on how heritage can be addressed in physical planning, and how cultural tourism can be developed.

The results of Lancewad will be presented to the Dutch-German-Danish Ministers Conference to be held in Esbjerg, Denmark, in autumn 2001.
