Odense City Museums and the archaeology on Funen

Odense City Museums is responsible for the archaeological excavations in 20 of the 32 counties on the island of Funen. This amounts to about 50 excavations every year. The archaeology department is managed by four curators.

As far as archaeological exhibitions goes the history dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. Odense City Museums was the first in the world to chronologically arrange an exhibit in a stone age, bronze age and iron age part. To day the exhibitions are located at the manor house Hollufgaard at the southeast outskirts of Odense. Here visitors can see finds in a regular exhibit and in the open storage where the best finds from Funen are displayed in 60 large show cases.
