Nevezice - the Celtic oppidumThe oppidum is situated on an inconspicuous rocky spur between the left bank of the Otava and a stream. It is the smallest of all seven Czech La Tene oppida. It has an area of only 13 hectares. The fortifications were built using the usual techniques, with horizontal interlaced stone-faced wooden latticing and fortified with vertical wooden beams. A ditch augments the rampart in some places. Very few archaeological finds were recovered here during several small-scale excavations. The site was evidently inhabited for a short time by a small community. It evidently served as a fortified base controlling small river traffic. The oppidum was destroyed by fire sometime around or after the mid 1st century BC.
