The Swedish answer

The Bjäre Peninsula in southern Sweden boasts one of the largest collections of Bronze Age burial mounds in Europe. With the help of GIS - a computer-based geographic information system - it is possible to show and study man's influence on this cultural landscape and visualise the historic development up to its present state. A special emphasis is laid on studying the vegetation on and within the Bronze Age burial mounds. The accumulated earth heaps of Bjäre allow us to reconstruct the vegetation history from the Bronze Age to today.

The project's results are presented to the large number of visitors directly at the site through the Föreningen Bronstid - an association dedicated to studying the Bronze Age. This active forum for discussion is very important for the future development of the cultural landscape.
